Our History

The story of Dorrell Oliver begins in the early 20th century with the birth of Dan Dorrell in 1903. His family home, located in Monk Street, Abergavenny, would later become the firm's headquarters. Both Dan and his brother Bill, born in 1913, grew up within these walls, their lives interconnected with the town's history. Dan pursued a career in accounting, establishing his own firm in 1928. Initially operating from offices in a nearby building on Monk Street, close to St. Marys Chambers, he laid the foundation for what would become Dorrell Oliver. Bill joined Dan shortly after, forging a partnership that would shape the firm's early years.

The year 1937 marked a significant turning point as Mr. Oliver, born in 1914, qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Newport. After gaining experience as an accountancy tutor in Newport, South Wales, he joined Messrs Dorrell, bringing his expertise and vision to the growing practice. The partnership of Dorrell, Oliver, and Co. was formally established in 1947, marking a new chapter in the firm's development. Around this time, they moved to their current premises on Monk Street, a location that has served as a hub for their services and a testament to their enduring legacy.

The subsequent decades witnessed the practice's expansion. New partners with deep expertise joined the fold, including Brian Butterworth FCA, Fred Utting FCA, and Huw Thomas FCA, during the 1960s. These esteemed colleagues contributed immensely to the firm's growth, their long careers marked by dedication and significant contributions to the field of accounting.

Our Present Structure

Dorrell Oliver Ltd has evolved to reflect contemporary business needs while upholding its core values. Peter Lea FCA, a director since the firm's incorporation, joined the practice in 1974, quickly rising through the ranks to become a partner and then senior partner in 2000. He brings decades of experience and a commitment to providing exceptional client service.

Ernie Moore FCA, another director with extensive experience, also joined in 1974. Having previously gained valuable experience in the West Midlands and Bristol, he made his mark at Dorrell Oliver, becoming a partner shortly after Peter and contributing significantly to the firm's success.

Ashley Vowles ACA FCCA joined the team in 1987, building his career within the firm. He qualified with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales after studying at the University of South Wales, demonstrating a commitment to professional excellence. In 2019, he became a director, leveraging his broad range of experience to guide the firm towards continued growth and success.
