At Books n' Accounts, we are a unique style of bookkeeping and accounts management service, founded by David Holton, who has over 20 years of experience in running and owning successful retail and installation businesses. With a background in running businesses, David brings a broader view to bookkeeping than most accountants, having maintained a hands-on approach to the accounting side of his own businesses. He has always believed in being hands-on with his finances, never having successfully found anyone to handle his books for him. This approach has instilled in him a deep understanding of the importance of accurate bookkeeping.

- Is there really a market for my business?
- How much time will be needed to get established?
- Is it a full-time business or would it be better to run part-time to start with?
- Will I need staff/premises/transport?
- What will my costs really be to get up and running?
- Will I need more funding as I go on?
- What do I need to do, and know about Tax? NI? VAT? Banks and Loans? What about marketing, margins, budgets, etc?
- What kind of structures and systems will benefit me and my business?
- What insurance will I need?
- Am I being realistic about my targets and objectives?
- Is now the right time to do it?
What is Bookkeeping?
Bookkeeping is the recording of financial records in a business. It is an essential part of running any business. However, the exact nature of 'the books' can vary enormously from business to business. In its simplest form, bookkeeping can be a list of income and expenditure. From this list, the level of profit or loss can be calculated. This form of bookkeeping is really only suitable for very simple businesses as it is very difficult to keep track of assets (things the business owns), liabilities (things the business owes others) as well as money the business owners may have invested in the business. Most businesses use a system of bookkeeping called 'double entry bookkeeping'. This can be handwritten in books or ledgers, but is more often computerized. This type of bookkeeping makes it far easier to monitor the business's finances. It is also very easy to adapt to different sizes, types, and structures of business.
