At J F Balshaw & Co, we are a family-run accountancy firm based in Bolton, Lancashire, dedicated to providing a friendly and personal accounting service to medium and small businesses. Our team, comprising of a father-daughter partnership, is comprised of two Chartered Accountants with over 60 years of combined experience in practice and industry. Our extensive expertise and personalized approach enable us to offer a comprehensive range of services tailored to the unique needs of our clients.
Our Story
Kate, our team member, trained in the audit department of a big four firm in Manchester and qualified in 2003. She then moved into a Group Accountant role in a listed global manufacturing company, followed by five years of experience in Group and European accounting roles before joining our family practice in 2009. John, our other team member, articled in a North West practice between 1961 and 1967 and went on to spend 25 years in industry, working as a Chief Accountant and later setting up his own practice in 1992, specializing in small business and individual tax advice.

Self Employment: Sole Traders and Partnerships
We understand the unique challenges faced by self-employed individuals, including sole traders and partners. We offer assistance with preparing annual accounts, filing self-assessment tax returns with HMRC, and registrations with HMRC within three months of commencing trade. We can also provide guidance on keeping track of income and expenditure, simplifying paperwork, and acting as agents for dealing with HMRC.
Limited Companies
We provide expert advice on incorporating a limited company, preparing annual accounts for submission to Companies House, and submitting corporation tax returns to HMRC. Additionally, we assist with cash flow forecasts, profit projections, and assisting with the raising of finance for a new company.
Individual Tax Affairs
We offer a range of services, including self-assessment tax returns for individuals reporting property income, investment income, and capital gains.
Individuals, Trusts, and Estates
We provide assistance with the preparation of trust and estate accounts and tax returns, and reporting administration period income to HMRC.
Payroll Services
We offer payroll services for weekly and monthly paid employees, including the provision of payslips, RTi reporting to HMRC, end-of-year P60s and P11d forms, and dealing with starters and leavers.
VAT including MTD (Making Tax Digital)
The requirements of MTD have created an additional administrative burden for many small business owners who are VAT registered. We can assist by advising on suitable software, helping with the creation of MTD compatible spreadsheets, and providing book-keeping services for those unable to manage it themselves.
