History of the Firm

Ray Fiander and Lee Tovell started the firm on 1st January 1977. Lee had just come out of Whittaker Bailey (which had become Price Waterhouse in Southampton) because he was "too young" to be a partner! So he started on his own in 1976 operating from 20 Brunswick Place. Ray had come to Southampton to start a branch office for Barter Durgan & Muir (a Petersfield-based firm which is still operating) but left to start his own practice in 1974. They met through membership of Southampton Round Table and realized that sole practice was not the way forward for either of them and so joined forces on 1st January 1977. They tossed a coin to decide the way the firm's name would read. As 'Fiander' came up heads, 'Fiander Tovell' was named.
